All the vehicle has to do is meet the criteria for class of CDL you're going for. If it's a Class A CDL, then it has to be a combination of a pickup and a trailer with a GVW of more than 10,000 lbs., so long as the GCW of the combination is in excess of 26,000 lbs. So long as it's registered as a commercial vehicle, it's eligible. However, as this combination doesn't use air brakes, you'll receive a "no air brakes" restriction.
If the Gross Combination Weight Rating (the combined Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of the truck and of the trailer) is in excess of 26,000 lbs., you can use it to test for a Class A CDL. However, you'll receive an "L" ("no air brakes") restriction, which will prohibit you from operating a CMV equipped with air brakes (such as a tractor-trailer).
Hitch the trailer. Connect the lights. Start your car or truck. Turn the turn signal on. Get out and go behind the trailer. See if they blink. Repeat for the other side.
