Depending on the age of the tractor will depend on the features of the carburetor. Many new riding mower carburetors will have a fuel servo which has been known to have caused these problems. Many of the new B&S Vanguard engines have this. Kohler & Tecumseh however I do not know.
A backfiring engine is usually the result of a carb that needs it's needles tuned. The High speed needle probably needs to be turned in slightly to lean out the mixture.
When adjusting the needles do so in 1/8 - 1/4 turns.
Check your spark plug, replace if needed, and set it so the spark plug gap is correct.
