Depends on the vehicles weight. There is a thing called thinking distance. The time it takes you to think, react, and actually apply the brakes. This averages around 1.5 seconds. At 55 you will travel around 122 feet before you even hit the brakes. Then you hit the brakes and it will take around another 112 feet to stop. Added together the average for a modern passenger car would be around 234 feet. This is the very reason tailgating causes so many accidents. Stay 3 seconds behind the car in front of you no matter your speed and you will be able to stop. Be closer and you may not be able to stop. 3 seconds is allot of distance at 55 mph.
