You do not have to be the original owner to be on the insurance. You just need to call the insurance carriers company and ask that you be added as a driver on that vehicle.

Bare in mind that just because the owner of the car has insurance does NOT mean that "You" will be covered under that persons policy, such as an "Operators Policy" also known as a "Named Driver Policy".
