On a tipper/dump truck, or any 6x4 commercial tractor, power is transferred only to one axle during normal operations. Engaging the differential lock activates a mechanism which transfers power so that both drive axles are engaged for when it is needed.
This is not to be confused with a transfer case, which transfers power to the steer axle. Transfer cases tend to be a bit rare on commercial road vehicles, but do appear on specialised vehicles (such as off-highway tippers and quarry trucks, prime mover trucks, tactical military vehicles, etc).
