What is authorised dealer?

An authorized dealer is one who has a contract with the manufacturer to sell their vehicles. This grants rights and responsibilities that a non-authorized dealer doesn't have.

First, rights: The authorized dealer is allowed to order both vehicles and parts directly from the manufacturer. The dealer can also use the name of the manufacturer in his dealership name, so instead of "Rush Truck Center" it can be "Rush International Truck Center" or "Rush Freightliner Truck Center." You get access to their service manuals and their network of factory technicians. And you get your company's address listed in the manufacturer's list of dealers.

Next, responsibilities: Take International, because I'm pretty familiar with their dealerships--I had to sit in front of one all weekend once waiting for them to open and change my water pump. (When you get paid by the mile this is NOT what you want to do!) An International dealership looks like an International dealership, just as a Freightliner dealer looks like a Freightliner dealer and a Peterbilt dealer looks like a Peterbilt dealer. Which means if you're going to sell Internationals, you have to spend the money to make your store look like drivers expect it to look. They have to maintain a certain stock level of popular parts--no, you don't need to keep an extra engine sitting there but you have to keep water pumps, belts, injectors, lots of filters, maybe a few radiators...basically, the parts that break on trucks, you need to keep in stock. And you have to send your people for training on a regular basis.
