It is a reservoir for hydraulic oil for the main hydraulic pump. Its purpose is to supply oil to the main hydraulic pump during start-up to prevent cavitation. Cavitation is caused by "vacuum" created by the main pump when it is not receiving any charge oil from the transmission pump. Without this, damage and wear will occur to the main pump due to lack of lubrication, and in time will give you weak hydraulics and then require either a complete replacement or complete overhaul of the main pump, to the tune of roughly $1000-$2000. Hope this helps!
Some were actually made by John Deere, newer versions are made by Murray ,I was informed if the gas tank is in the rear,it's a John Deere,if it's in the front it's a Murray version!
The John Deere gasoline tank on the 2305 can hold a lot of gas. It can hold up to 100 gallons of fuel that will last a few days if not a week. The tank is very effective.

The fuel tank will be provided by the chassis manufacturer. What do you have? Chev, John Deere, Work Horse, and so on?
Had same problem with my John Deere 335. It was because there was dirt in gas tank and fuel filter was half clogged. Need to replace fuel filter.
The fuel shut-off for a John Deere 350G excavator is typically located near the fuel tank or on the fuel line. It may be a valve that you can turn to stop the fuel flow to the engine. For precise location details, it's recommended to consult the operator's manual or check with a John Deere service technician.
The John Deere 1130SE gas tank is vented through a vented fuel cap, which allows air to enter the tank as fuel is consumed. This venting prevents a vacuum from forming inside the tank, ensuring a steady flow of fuel to the engine. Proper venting is essential for optimal engine performance and to avoid fuel flow issues. Always ensure the vent is clear and functioning to maintain efficiency.
The manual says replace the gage if it doesn't read when parked on level ground and gas in the tank.
