It's not possible to give even a ballpark answer without more specific details. You need to know the coin's mint mark and what specific grade of "mint condition" the coin is in, which will require a professional inspection. Tiny differences in condition can have a major effect on the value of a high-quality coin, and the mint mark can have a significant effect on the value of two otherwise identical coins.
For example, as of 06/2010 a 1909-D half-eagle in the lowest uncirculated grade MS-60 retails for a bit over $500, while one in the middle of the uncirculated range at MS-65 can bring nearly $20,000. For a coin made in New Orleans (O mint mark) values in those same 2 grades are $29,000 and $585,000 respectively!
Assuming the coin is circulated and has no mintmarks, the 1908 Indian Head half eagle ($5) is a more common higher mintage date. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. In general retail values for low grade coins are $455.00-$480.00, better grade are $490.00-$500.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $510.00-$535.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelery or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer.
Value runs from $185.00 to $250.00 in circulated condition.
The coin has .12094oz of pure gold, the coin is worth $165.40 just for the gold.
If you mean a $2.50 Gold coin dated 1908 retail values for a circulated coin are $185.00-$250.00 with uncirculated at $350.00+
about 1,400
Current retail value for a certified 1908 Half Eagle is about $5,000.00 in MS-64
Only Liberty Head half eagles were made in 1904. The first Indian Head was made in 1908.
The first Indian Head Half Eagle ($5) gold piece was struck in 1908. A coin of this kind dated 1880 would be a Liberty Head gold coin. Please check the coin again and post new question. Also look on the back of the coin for any mintmarks.
It depends upon the condition of the 2.5 gold coin. The Indian Head was minted from 1908-1929. On face value, the coin is: 90% Purity / 22 Karat / Gold Content - 0.12094 troy Oz. So on fine to very good condition, the price for one of these beatuiful coins would be anywhere from about 325-400 dollars. Best- Wayne www.personal-goal-setting/gold-coins.html
Assuming the coin is circulated and has no mintmark, retail values are $350.00-$510.00 depending on the actual grade of the coin. The value just for the gold is $292.00
