They were formed from two separate Detroit groups, the Distants and the Primes; members of the two groups initially got together as the Elgins, but had to change their name on signing their record deal because there was already another group with that name. (Oddly, this other Elgins group was NOT the same group who later signed to Motown in the mid-Sixties as "the Elgins", who were a third, totally unrelated group.) In 1962, Motown also released a one-off single by the Temptations, "Mind Over Matter", which was credited to "The Pirates".
