There are two series of "golden"(*) dollar coins currently being minted.

The Native American series shows a stylized image of Sacajawea, the Native American guide who helped Lewis and Clark explore the western part of North America in 1803-05. The reverse shows a soaring eagle (2000-08) and other Native American images (2009-present).

The Presidential series has four different designs issued each year, with portraits of the presidents in the order in which they served. The series will continue until it catches up with whoever the remaining living presidents are at that time; by custom it's not likely they will not be honored while living.

(*) Remember that the coin isn't really gold, just gold-colored. It's actually made of brass.
