The head of state of the Commonwealth countries is the Queen/King of England. Currently this is Queen Elizabeth II. Her power is mostly ceremonial, as these countries have their own governments and law making powers. These countries do have representatives for the Queen to officially sign those laws into effect.

Who will be the next head of Commonwealth?

The next head of the Commonwealth will be whoever inherits the throne of the United Kingdom and the thrones of the other Commonwealth realms like Canada, Australia and New Zealand. If nature takes its course this will be Charles who will become King of all the Commonwealth realms on the death or abdication of his mother, the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. However, should Elizabeth outlive Charles, his son William will become Head of the Commonwealth. In short, whoever is next in line for the throne of the Commonwealth realms will become Head of the Commonwealth. It is important to realise that this protocol for choosing the Head of the Commonwealth applies only to the position of Head of the Commonwealth, and this position is symbolic of the association of the Commonwealth countries to each other. The position has no bearing on the government of those countries that are not Commonwealth Realms (i.e. the republics of the Commonwealth). The Queen is not Queen of India, for example, even though the Indians accept her as Head of the Commonwealth.

Is Queen Elizabeth II the queen of Australia?

Elizabeth II is the sovereign of all the Commonwealth Realms, which are the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica and 11 more. So she is the head of state of all those countries. As it is impossible for one single person to deliver all the functions of head of state in each country, she designates a Governor - General in all countries different to the UK, and they represent her and her authority. This comes from the Empire, and when it dissappeared, the Queen was named the ruler of all the old british colonies, that had gained independence.

What does it mean when the queen is referred to as Head Of State?

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland or the U.K. like every other country in the world, has both a Head of State who is the Sovereign (currently Queen Elizabeth II) and a Head of Government (currently David Cameron, the Prime Minster). The U.K. is governed by Ministers of the Crown appointed by the Prime Minister in the name of the Sovereign. The Sovereign is also Head of the Commonwealth as a separate office from being Head of State of the U.K. but her exact status within each Commonwealth country varies dependent on that country's specific Constitution. But within the U.K. the Head of State personifies the State as is in law He or She is an integral part of the legislature, head of the executive, head of the executive, head of the judiciary, commander-in-chief of all the armed forces of the Crown and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. In the member states of the Commonwealth of which the Sovereign is Head of State, Her representative is a Governor-General. In U.K. dependencies the Sovereign is usually represented by a Governor who is responsible to the British government. As Head of State and Head of the Commonwealth, the primary convention today is Queen does not get involved in politics neither within the U.K nor within any Commonwealth nation or State. She is ruler but not Head of Government. whereas in some countries in the world, like the United States, the Head of State is elected and is also the Head of Government (currently Barrack Obama). In many other countries like the Republic of Ireland, the President of the Republic is also in effect ceremonial rather like Queen Elizabeth is in the U.K. whereas other countries have an elected President who is both Head of State and Head of that nation's Government with specifically defined periods of office and power defined in that country's Constitution.

What is the difference between the british commonwealth and the commonwealth of nation?

Well there is no British empire as such nowadays. The ex-empire countries are known as commonwealth nations, many of these still have Queen Elizabeth II as their head of state, and have a close relationship with the United Kingdom.

What is the Commonwealth of Nations?

The Commonwealth of Nations is an association of 54 sovereign states, including the UK. Most, but not all, of the countries were once under British rule. Today they are all independent and include 33 republics, 16 monarchies where the Queen is Head of State, and 5 countires with their own monarch. The UK does not rule the Commonwealth; it is one of the 54 members, just as it is one of the members of the European Union.
