Smith would take command of the rebels after Johnston was wounded during the afternoon of the 31st. It was considered a draw, but both sides would claim victory. Robert E Lee would take command the evening of June 1st, and the Army of Northern Virginia was born.

Johnston, was badly wounded and hospitalised, so a new appointment had to be made. The new man was Robert E.
