Why was the commonwealth created?

The Commonwealth of Nations (or the British Commonwealth) was created in order for the United Kingdom to keep close with its territories, as the country realized that more and more of their territories were becoming independent. So the UK formed the Commonwealth in which it is an organization of all its territories pre WW1. It assured that the Queen/King of England would be recognized as the Head of the State even after independence, so in reality, the UK is still somewhat in control of a number of the nations in the world today. That is why there is no ruler of Canada or Australia, for example, as Queen Elizabeth II currently rules.
