A widget is a placeholder term used in economics. i.e "The company xyz makes 23,000 widgets a year at 2.00 net profit each."

Recently it has begun to be used as the term for the items on the dashboard of Apple computers. Since, it's spun out to encompass small applications that have a single or few functions.
