The pen, originally a nib or quill, was made to apply ink to materials such as paper. Originally it was water-soluble and could be licked off. Eventually pens were built with ink reservoirs or cartridges, and later disposable refills with new ball-point tips.

While many uses still favor the erasable graphite pencil, the pen has some advantage in readability, and where erasability is not desirable (checks and other documents).
