In the past this term was coined as a server. This is a bit of an obselete term as there is now NAS. Network Attached Storage can be used as a full operational computer running file sharing services or sharing-specific distributions of Linux such as FreeNAS. In addition to solutions as FreeNAS or multi-raided storage servers, there are small, private or small-business oriented NAS drives available that are composed of a controller card, a network card, and a housing for one or more harddrives.
