Mainframes can serve hundreds, even thousands of workstations simultaneously. They are primarily used for high-speed data transactions, particularly in the finance and banking industries, but also in airline reservations. Basically anywhere that requires a large data centre with multiple user-access. Cloud-based computing can provide similar functionality and, in some cases, can replace mainframe usage outright, but the need to maintain direct control over the data is usually the primary concern.
