There is the real world, which are things that are outside the computer, and then the virtual world that is inside the computer.

Input Devices: Input devices are pieces of equipment that allow the user to insert information or material into a computer, some examples maybe: Keyboard, mouse, joystick, scanner.

Output Devices: Are also pieces of equipment, but they display and produce material, rather than create the material. examples could be: Monitor or printer.

Input in information being fed into the device of interest, like a computer. If you type on your keyboard, the computer receives input. Output is information being send out to a different device. When you send an e-mail from your computer the message is output to a server. If you change your focus, however, so that you are looking at a keyboard, the information being fed to the computer is output, and the power the computer sends the keyboard is input. It is all a matter of perspective.
