No. Not at all. They are programmed to make yes and no choices, but they do not "think". We are a long way yet from creating artificially intelligent computers that think for themselves.

Computers can only perform 3 - 4 functions. Here are some:

  • Calculate
  • Process
  • Store memory

Compared to the human brain, computers are thick! They simply do what we tell them to do, and nothing more. Computers excel in being able to process vast amounts of data (number crunching) twenty-four hours a day, and every day of the year - whilst the human brain needs sleep and rest.

The word comes from Old English þoht, or geþoht, from stem of þencan "to conceive of in the mind, consider". The computer does not (to date) conceive thoughts. It also does not consider information, but processes it based on our considerations. The dictionary states thinking as "to have a conscious mind, to some extent of reasoning, remembering experiences, making rational decisions, etc.". The computer does not reason but reacts according to our reasoning, does not remember experiences but stores data and uses that data when programmed to do so, and does not make rational decisions. Those decisions are made by us and passed on to the computer.
