In order to become a computer programmer you will need to obviously study and prepare, preferably by getting an IT degree, that would be the ideal scenario and also the most basic one, because the computer world is rapidly changing and programmers need to be up to date in order to be able to do a better job. So, it's all about studying hard, practicing and being all the time in the look out for the latest developments in industry.

Trial and error worked for me. The most important thing is to master search engines! Then whenever you have a problem, you can search the internet to find others who have had similar problems and learn from how they fixed it.

If you can't find it by search, you can ask questions on Forums. But for 99% of problems, someone has already had it and if you use the right search phrases you will find what you want.

Being what's considered a genius is a matter of genetics, which you typically can't modify. So you have to be a genius in the first place, which I'm going to assume you're not (don't feel bad.. I consider myself a fairly smart person, but by no means a genius). If you've got that going for you, then you need both an interest in computers, as well as a natural aptitude for them. Some people might be geniuses, but their skills and inclinations may be directed to a field other than computers.
