• Both computers need to have a NIC(Network Interface Card) installed.

It depends. If you are making a normal patch cable, you're supposed to crimp both sides the same: 12345678 to 12345678. But if you're making a crossover cable you switch 1 & 3 and 2 & 6 on one side. So you'd have 12345678 one one side and 36145278 on the other.

Lets say you have 1 outlet but you want to connect yout xbox and your ps3 to the same outlet and not have to switch them out. You will need 2 cat5 cables you will need a wired routuer (you can find one at your local staples or office max) and 3 cat5 cables (for 2 devices needing internet). Cable 1 comes from wall socket, goes into netgear router, and you can connect any Ethernet capable device from there.
