How do you delete things?

You can right-click and select "Delete" or press the delete key to move the file the a folder of "deleted" items. They will stay there until you or a program remove them. You can right click on the folder (usually called recycle bin) and select "Empty recycle bin." To actually delete a file without moving it by holding down Shift while you press Delete. Now the file is marked for deletion. It will be overwritten next time that disk space is needed.

Simply Pressing the Delete Key on a keyboard or Right-clicking on the file and selecting "Delete" will mark a file for deletion. The file will be "moved" to your Recycle Bin, and stay there until you manually empty it, or a program does it for you. If you run the built-in clean-up tool on Windows, it will try to empty it as well. To mark a file fully deleted, you will need to make sure that it is removed from the recycle bin, or when you first delete the file, hold Shift as you press Delete. Believe it or not, the file still exists after this. It is left to be overwritten when that sector's space is needed for storing a new file. Until it is overwritten, the file can actually be recovered. Therefore, if you want to permanently delete a file you will need to use a "shredder." It shouldn't matter much which one you get. There is no reason to pay for one, since there are so many free programs of this nature. It depends on what you want to delete. If you want to delete programs, you should go to the Control Panel to Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features. This is preferable to simply locating the folder for the program and deleting it.

If you mean personal stuff, data, music, videos, text files, images, then you would first open the folder where the items are located. Just click once to select the file you want to delete. If you want to select everything, you could do Ctrl-A or click on Edit at the top and then Select All. Or if you just want a few things, you'd hold Ctrl as you click what you want. Hold Shift if you want to select a range from the first selected one. From there, you can either move them to the Recycle Bin by pressing the Delete key, or you can hold down Shift while pressing Delete to permanently delete them.

If you want to delete junk files, there are a number of utilities for that. There is the Microsoft Disk Cleanup tool. One way to run it is to go to the start menu and then go to the Run option (XP and older) or the search bar at the bottom (Vista and newer) and type in Cleanmgr and click Ok. Or you might want a 3rd-party tool like Ccleaner.
