Yes. Depending on the nature of your computer problem, the hard drive may be completely intact. This hard drive can be removed and installed in a working computer, which should be able to access any files you need to retrieve.

If the hard drive is damaged or corrupted, you may need the help of data recovery software or a data recovery professional. Data recovery software will help get the data off of your hard drive, but you risk further corrupting the data. Use data recovery software at your own risk and only consider using it if you have an advanced technical understanding of computers.

Another route is to take the computer in to a data recovery professional. These companies and individuals are trained in data recovery and have highly specialized equipment, including cleanrooms, with which to recover data.

While it may not work in every case, there are ways to obtain the data from a hard drive after a computer crashes. There are several programs which will scan for the lost data. The best option though, is to back up the data in the event of a crash, therefore eliminating the potentially unsuccessful process of re obtaining it.
