A Ballpoint pen has a round ball at the tip, which is used to control the flow of ink onto the page. Almost all modern pens are ballpoint, ballpoint pens are a relatively recent invention.

The only common alternative to a Ballpoint pen is a Fountain pen.

A Fountain pen is identifiable by the shape of its "nib", which is commonly a flat piece of metal with a channel down the middle which controls the flow of ink onto the page.

Broadly speaking, the most common ballpoint pen you will find is a disposable type, with a thin tube of ink which will be visible from the outside if the casing is clear.

Disposable pens are commonly marked with a coloured cap to indicate the colour of the ink inside.

When writing with a ballpoint pen, it is usually neccessary to press the tip onto the page, or the ink will not come out in a regular fashion. As a consequence when writing on soft paper, in a pad for example there is usually a visible mark left on the pages below. This can be an advantage, as a layer of Carbon paper can be put behind the top page, and the carbon will be left on the page below, leading to "carbon copies".

It is not normally practical to use a fountain pen with carbon copies, as by contrast, a fountain pen does not need a lot of pressure in order to write.

Hence when the same person is writing they will normally have two distinct styles from which type of pen they use.

There are some more expensive types of ballpoint which allow you to keep the pen and replace the ink supply, but Fountain pens are usually designed with a replaceable supply of ink in mind.

Most modern types of fountain pen use an internal cartridge to store the reservoir of ink, although historically earlier fountain pens were supplied with ink by dipping the tip into a jar of ink, and some later types were designed to allow the ink to be "sucked up" through the nib into an internal reservoir.

I hope this helps!
