The original SMTP specification had the assumption that it would be used only for sending plain text in ASCII (what is now called ANSI). MIME adds enhancements to SMTP to allow one to send binaries (such as embedded pictures or attached data files) and messages in non-ANSI alphabets (e.g. Chinese).
