In one GigaByte, or GB, there are 1,000 Mega Bites, or MBs. More acurately, a computer can only count by 2's (base 2). A person counts by tens. 1024, or 2 to the 10th power. The phrase "kilo" meaning 1000 and "mega" meaning one million don't quite apply when we are talking about computers.

In computers, nearly everything is measured in binary, or twos. A switch is "binary"; it is either on or off. A magnetic field is binary; it is north or south. An electrical field is binary; it is positive or negative.

So most things related to computers are measured in binary, or in powers of binary.

So in computers, one kilobyte is 1024 bytes. One megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, and one gigabyte is 1024 megabytes.

A "bit" is a "binary digit"; a one or zero, on or off. A "byte" is 8 bits, and is equivalent to a single character, a letter or number. A kilobyte is about one page of text, a megabyte is about one book, and a gigabyte is about the size of the encyclopedia.
