If we're talking about information in storage memory in most laptops/desktops, it will have to be a rough estimate. Generally, most systems right now are being equipped with 500GB to 1000GB hard drives. Usually, 500, 750 or 1000GB are the standard stock sizes that retailers sell. This would put the average closer to 750 in general. The real answer would have to depend on data showing how much extra storage space people usually upgrade to. In terms of the actual amout of data actively stored on those drives, it is very difficult to say. Most users, generally, don't even fill up 750 or 1000GB hard drives all the way.

The amount of data storage capacity needed varies from person to person. The purpose(s) for which the computer will be used determines the amount of storage that will be needed. Those who plan on storing large amounts of videos music and photos on their computer will need considerably more storage than someone who is using a computer for work or for document creation. The average hard drive sold in most computers today is between 160GB and 250GB. This is normally plenty of space for the average user. But as files continue to get bigger and more and more people continue to store more and more information on their hard drives, the amount of space needed will continue to grow.
