A photo can be of any size, so you can't say with any certainty how much space a certain number of photos takes up.
You can no longer view these files, but they will take up less space on your hard drive. If you want to view them again, just unzip it (pretty much the same way you zipped it). Compressing files is good for sending them to someone, or if you need more space on your hard drive. It gets smaller.
