Netiquette (network etiquette) is a body of rules and guidelines that identify standard acceptable practices for use of the technology over networks - mostly on the web, but there are netiquette rules for cell phone use too.

Netiquette is important for the same reason etiquette is important in live social interaction - so you will be accepted and respected by respecting the conventions of the online communication platform you are using. Be careful, as it is not one uniform set of rules and guidelines for all types of communication. What is okay in one (e.g.: abbreviations in text messaging) may not be acceptable in another (e.g.: blogs or E-Mail).
