Assuming you mean short term memory then ....
1. It's faster than storage memory. Ram Speeds are much faster then the access or seek times of lomg term storage memory (like hard drives). Thus these temporary files are quickly stored and recovered while the processor is doing something else.
2. It's only there while powered, so it's no good for long term storage.

This is because every time you do something on your computer your processor uses memory to process the action and decide what to do (i.e open a program etc), it uses RAM memory. Whenever you shut down your computer it erases the memory so that it is free for use next time you use your computer.

∙ 14y agoRAM (Random Access Memory... read/write) is fast so it can keep up with the needs of your computer. However, to make it fast it requires power to maintain the data and must be periodically "refreshed". Once the power to the computer is removed from the RAM, it forgets everything, that's why you need disk storage, which does much the same thing as RAM, but it's a storage medium that's referred to as "non-volatile", meaning that it won't go away when the power is turned off.

However, not all forms of RAM are short term. There is SRAM, which is more long-term or "static (StaticRAM).
