That would be DDR-3 memory. Some multi-core systems use DDR-2 memory.

Then of course there is cache memory, but that is a variation of SRAM, and it has been used ever since the 386 or 486 machines. Nowadays, cache memory is not in discrete chips, but a part of the processor. Placing the cache memory and memory controller on the CPU die greatly improves the throughput.

What was used insted of a computer in the olden?

The computer was designed to solve math problems. It then evolved into what we have today. Before computers, the abacus was a popular tool for calculating, and was usually faster then the computer (in fact, people made money by betting on what would solve first: abacus or computer)

Differences between a computer and human brain?

Some differences between human beings and computers are:Brains are analogue; computers are digitalComputers access information in memory by polling a memory address, brains search memories using cuesThe brain is a massively parallel machine; computers are modular and serialProcessing speed is not fixed in the brain; there is no system clockShort-term memory is not like RAMComputers are hardware that runs software, there is no "mind software" running on brainsSynapses are far more complex (electrochemical) than computer logic gates (electrical)Computers use processors and memory for different functions, there is no such distinction in the brainComputers are designed, built and are of fixed architecture, the brain is a self-organizing systemComputers have no body, brains do

What is the difference between super computers and desktops?

Super computers are much more powerful. They have faster processors, more memory and are designed for complex tasks that the average desktop computer can not perform.

Why do mobile devices such as laptop computers use specially designed CPUs?

The CPUs in desktop computers are designed to provide maximum performance. This is usually not a concern for mobile computers; power efficiency and low heat are more important. So the processors in laptops and handhelds are designed slightly differently from those in desktops, to fit the needs of mobile suers better.

What kinds of computers is the PowerPC compatible with?

PowerPC processors can only be used in computers or peripherals that were originally designed to run them. Some computers that have PowerPC or PowerPC-based processors include:* Macs made between 1994 and 2005 * The Pegasos and Pegasos II (a desktop computer designed for operating system developers) * the EFIKA (a motherboard for embedded systems) * The GameCube uses a custom PowerPC-compatible CPU * The Wii uses a custom PowerPC-compatile CPU based on the one in the GameCube * The Xbox 360 uses a triple-core PowerPC-based CPU * The PS3 uses the Cell processor, which is based upon and mostly compatible with PowerPC processors. * The AmigaOne, a computer designed to be the successor to the 68k-based Amigas.

What are the differences between apple and IBM processors?

Apple worked with IBM and Motorola to develop the Power PC processors which were a development of IBM's POWER1 processor. Apple used Power PC processors in their range of Macintosh computers between 1994 and 2006 when Apple switched to using the processors from Intel's range. IBM produces a range of processors for all types of devices including the Cell processor used in Sony's PlayStation (The X Box also uses a Power PC processor). (See links below) In 2008 Apple spent $278 million to acquire PA Semi a company which designs processors based on the Power PC model. It is not known what Apple intends to do with processors designed by the company.
