Instead of using different plates for the 7 segments and supplying separate voltage for each of them, a single plate is used and semiconductor in the form of FETs is embedded in glass so that voltage of every segment can be controlled by the semiconductor device and a common voltage source can be used. Nowadays, calculators form characters other than numbers which requires only a selected area to be supplied with voltage. This is accomplished using semiconductors.
