The BIOS is necessary to bring up the computer. There are really no specific advantages since it is a necessary component. Compared to EFI, the advantage would be more control over one's own computer.

The disadvantages are that the BIOS often boots in 16-bit real mode (not 32-bit nor 64-bit protected mode), and because of the type of chip used, it is not always the fastest. BIOS routines are generally inefficient, so modern OSs have their own hardware routines and depend on drivers. Some of the devices the BIOS initializes are obsolete. Some BIOSes still have the initial types of bugs from the PC-XT days. BIOS EEPROMS can be overwritten or destroyed by users when updating the BIOS. Theoretically, they could become virus infected or overwritten by viruses, but they are not as vulnerable to this these days. EFI is a new standard to help get past of some of the limitations of the traditional ROM-BIOS.
