Basically - it's the monitor, the brightness, the contrast settings etc. Those are some of the things that can damage your eyes and cause eye strains. Your eyes get to adapted to looking at words smaller. When this happens, while you're in class you may not be able to see the whiteboard from a distance because your eyes are used to looking at things closely. But it's not only while you're in class, this can happen at anytime, like while driving, you may not be able to see signs from a distance. This is why it is strongly important to not look at the computer screen all day and get some nice exercise.

Because of the close proximity of the screen in relation to your eyes, it can create eye strain after several hours. It is always a good idea to give the ol' eyeballs some rest away from a computer screen every couple hours.

Just like reading a book, long periods of staring at a computer's display can place substantial demands upon the eye. Eye strain occurs as a result of muscle fatigue (tiring of the small orbital muscles which articulate the eye, and the ancillary muscles which govern focus by altering the shape of the eye's lens).

Unlike when viewing television or a cinema screen, use of a computer entails proximity to the visual device, and the need to focus intently upon parts of it (in order to read, for instance). We all tend to to sit too close to our computer's display.

While using a computer, we also tend to blink less often which can lead to dehydration and irritation of the eye's surface; blinking serves the function of cleaning and moistening the exposed surface of the cornea. We blink less frequently and for shorter duration when focused intently upon something.

Inadequate ambient lighting and inappropriately configured visual devices (poor brightness/contrast settings, bad viewing angles) can exacerbate eye strain considerably.

It should be noted that while tired eyes are uncomfortable, staring at a screen for long periods does not damage the eyes, though it may give you a headache.

Using a computer for long periods forces your eyes to constantly focus at a short distance. Taking regular breaks (5 minutes every hour) - by getting up from your seat, and walking around - not only relaxes your muscles - but allows your eyes to re-adjust to 'normal' use.

Take regular breaks. Get up form your seat and make a drink. That way, your eyes get to re-focus and your body gets its muscles moving after being in one place for a while.

How you could damage your health on a computer?

The constant staring at a screen and not moving for multiple hours can have negative effects on the eyes. From using the mouse for an extended period of time, people can come down with carpel tunnel syndrome, which is the equivalent of pulling a muscle in your wrist. Besides from that, the lack of movement and the slouch in posture can cause problems with your lower back, gluteal region, and hamstrings. Lastly, any exposure to light stimuli, such as the computer screen, will make falling asleep immediately after much harder, since your mind is still processing information.
