A computer is made of 8 main parts

First there is the motherboard which is the main chip in your computer where all the data passes though. All the parts in the computer are connected to the motherboard.

Next there is your CPU (i3, i5, i7 etc....) which carries out most of your computers instructions, mathematical, logical and input output operations. Think of this as being similar to the function of your brain.

The Hard disk drive, is made of a magnetic disk where the memory in your computer is stored. Most importantly, the operating system (Windows 7, Mac OSX, Linux etc.) in the computer is stored in the hard drive, and your computer cannot function without it. That's why, when you hold a magnet near a computer it stops working, because a magnet disrupts the magnetic function in the hard drive.

The RAM, (Random Access Memory) is a memory stick connected directly to your motherboard, which contains fast memory that can be accessed almost instantly. Memory from your hard drive is loaded onto the RAM when it needs use. An example is, when you turn on your computer, the operating system is loaded onto the RAM, so all the features can be accessed almost instantly.

Some computers contain a GPU, a graphical processing unit. This is similar to a CPU, except the GPU mainly processes graphical information. Sometimes the GPU is integrated into the motherboard or the CPU.

There is the Power Supply Unit or PSU. This simply takes the electricity from the outlet, and distributes it among the hardware in your computer.

You have your CD/DVD/Blue Ray drive. This is simply the slot where you put your disks to be read by the computer.

Lastly, your computer will have some sort of cooling system. Most computers use fans, to circulate the hot air out of your computer and to bring warm air in. A computer needs a cooling system to keep the temperature down or it will overheat. When a computer overheats, this can disrupt its functions and make it preform less effectively.
