When number lock is deactivated, your number pad becomes a direction pad containing arrow keys, page up/down keys, and home/end keys for cursor movement. This was before keyboards came with dedicated arrow keys. Many "old school" users still use the number pad for directional movement, however, there usually is no need with a dedicated arrow pad and mouse functions.
