AS/400 computer skills would include being familiar with the use of an AS/400, System i, or Power System (AS/400 doesn't really exist anymore, System i and Power System are its current derivatives).

One should know how to log on and off the system how to use menus typical to AS/400, how to work with a TN5250 terminal or emulation software such as Reflection, etc. One should be familiar with the concept of system libraries (ALIB, BLIB, etc), and how to change libraries (TO libraryname). One should know how to call menus (MENU menuname). In addition to the above, AS/400 system administration skills (if you're going to be managing / maintaining one of these systems) include knowing how to safely IPL ('boot' in non-AS/400 terms) create user accounts (using WRKUSRPRF, for instance), monitoring and shutting down stuck or funky jobs that are consuming resources (using WRKACTJOB, for instance), monitoring system resources (WRKSYSSTS), monitoring printers and output queues (WRKOUTQ), working with print writers (CHGWTR) working with devices (WRKDEVD), etc. It also means knowing how to back up an AS/400 system, working with and installing PTF packages (which can include fixes, upgrades, etc), and knowing how to deal with IBM, because you WILL be on the phone with them a lot, unless your system is supported by a vendor!! You should understand the typical IBM syntax (usually 3+3+3, or 3+3, for instance, WRKSYSSTS - WoRK with SYStem STatuS, WRKDEVD - WoRK with DEVice Description... CHGWTR - CHanGe WriTeR... WRKWTR - WoRK with WriTeR... it really does help to learn the basics) AS/400 admin skills should also include dealing with Twinax cabling (coax, and satin cable), Twinax hubs, Twinax addressing, Twinax media converters (example, Twinax to Parallel), and knowing what a balun is and what it's used for. You should know what "Vary On" and "Vary Off" mean. You should also know how to access the Function keys higher than F12 if using an emulator such as Reflection. One should also know how to write queries, work with stored procedures, and understand DB2 databases (unless you're running something else like Oracle on it), RPG and ILE programming. If your 400 is hosting virtual machines, a knowledge of how hypervisors work is useful.

The previous answer talked about using a keyboard, mouse, excel, and productivity software. While AS/400 may include productivity software, you won't ever find a mouse, VGA/DVI monitor, or a keyboard (unless it's a 5250 terminal) attached to an AS/400.

The original AS/400 is old, but its legacy lives on, because it's a stable system that just runs and runs efficiently. There's a reason IBM still produces and maintains these Power Systems.
