USB cables with double A type connectors can, WiFi can be used either directly or indirectly via a router/hub. Serial cables can be used to do a direct transfer although it has a slow baud rate. You can use 2 network cables vis a hub, switch or router - you can also use a single network cable if its a crossover cable. You can use bluetooth, Infa-red or any other number of wireless mesiums. I've used an old parallel printer cable before!
Either way - you need 3 common elements to do a transfer:
- A physical connection - the hardware used to make the transfer
- A logical connection - a common language (or protocol) for the physical hardware to 'talk' with and
- An application connection. usually an operating system, FTP program, web browser, firmware - something to build and deconstruct the data sent over the connection
A Network Router or Switch is the most common and fastest solution to connect computers and transfer data.
The internet is a World Wide Web of networked computers.
When you view a website, you are connecting to a computer known as a Server through other networked computers that provide information on where computers are located and how to Route you to the information you want to see.
Older Desktop and Laptop computers that have serial and/or parallel ports can be directly connected with a special cable without need for an intermediary device.
For dial-up Modem
For Broadband router
You can use the switch to connect the two or more computers. You can also connect them through wireless if connected computers are wireless enabled.
A router is used to connect several computers together on a network>
A modem, router, switch or hub.
Use a router.

Switch networking is a term used to describe a small hardware device that joins multiple computers together by using a low level network protocol level.
This is the definition of a computer network. Devices such as routers and bridges create logical network subnets and network domains that computers, printers, and other devices can connect with to join the network.
In computer networking HUB is a small, simple, inexpensive device. Hubs are used to join multiple computer together.
The network device that connect multiple networks that use the same protocol is a ROUTER.
A router connects multiple computers together and transmits data to its correct destination on a network.

A KVM switch, or Keyboard, Video and Mouse switch, is a type of hardware device that allows multiple input devices to be shared between multiple computers, thus allowing control of multiple computers. Although it is usually multiple computers that are connected to the KVM, typically only a small number is controlled at any time. They are often used between different OSes, when a person has switched to a new OS and plans to continue using their original OS.
A switch is typically used to connect multiple computers in a single residential unit to a modem.

The hub is a device for connecting multiple ethernet devices together and making them act as a single network segment.
