A transponder is a wireless communications, monitoring, or control device that picks up and automatically responds to an incoming signal. The term is a contraction of the words transmitter and responder. Transponders can be either passive or active.

How do program 1997 ford expedition key with new transponder?

Far as I have been researchin on the web there is a few steps that you can perform, like enter the master key (its 100% requier) and turning the car on for like 15 sec, then you turn it off, and insert the new transponder key, and turn the car on, and leave it running for about 10 min, but up to this point I{m still waiting for my new tranponder keys to test it, check on the web, since I read there is a posibility to lock your car on programming if its not propertly done. Still I will post back my experience if I make it work, believe me I´m not agree to pay over $100 to dealer´s for a spare key.
