The predecessor of what would later become the "internet" was a university-to-university computer network developed in conjunction with the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or "DARPA", and it soon became known as "DARPANET". Originally linking only a few research facilities, it expanded continually, connecting universities to commercial businesses engaged in defense industries, and continued to expand. These were connected using a communications protocol called Terminal Control Program/Internet Protocol, or "TCP/IP". The basic idea behind TCP/IP was that there was no network control point that could be destroyed; every server was capable of handling its own communications with other servers. A nuclear war might destroy one university or military facility or several, but the others could continue to function.

There were other wide networks; one was the "University to University Network" of colleges without defense connections; it was, predictably, known as "UUNET". Many large corporations such as Intel, Bell Labs, AT&T, and MCI connected their own internal networks, and other commercial networks such as Compuserve, GENie, and America Online connected to them as well. One final piece was a hobbyist network called FIDONET that used a "Store and Forward" communications protocol to distribute messages among servers that were only intermittently connected to each other.

As all of these various networks became INTER-connected, the casual terminology of the "Inter-Net" came into use. There is no "internet", singular; there is only the network of other networks, each standing alone, but connected to many other networks.
