The original function of the personal computer was to help the End-User to do Basic Accountant Processing, and or Book Keeping for the busy Home Person that was normally employed with the proper fiances.
Then not too far long after slower advancement and government releases into the Home make / Consumer market ( The Public ) we become more computer literate and some what computer reliant.
Now in my professional opinion for present day's needs and or uses for the Home Based Computer System there are a variety of uses and things you can do with it like on line educational things and or play video game for entertainment or begin to learn more of what you can if you are just starting out with them.

Different computer's will each have different roles to play and will each perform a different computation according to that role, but the purpose remains the same regardless of the role. Supercomputers can compute weather predictions, or compute nuclear reactions, whereas mainframes can compute large amounts of data transactions amongst many workstations. Desktop computers can perform all manner of computations, including the computation that allows a user to hurl a non-existent bird at a non-existent pig using a non-existent slingshot.
No matter what type of computer is involved, the computation it performs can essentially be reduced to a single but constantly changing number; a binary number. An extremely long binary number, but a number nonetheless. It is the manipulation of that number that is the computation. How it is manipulated and what it ultimately means is entirely dependant upon the interaction between the hardware, the software and the user (the peopleware).
