It is similar to the four thirds standard, developed between Olympus & Kodak.

However the 'micro' development it to eliminate the internal mirror mechanism, thus allowing the creation of smaller DSLRs that can compete size-wise with point & shoots etc. The lenses are therefore smaller, but no less capable in theory, & yet preserve full CMOS size usage.
