An incremental backup has the least amount of files. It contains only those few files that have changed since the last backup. In contrast, a complete backup does all the files in a filesystem. This is commonly done when backing up to a new set of media for the first time. Consecutive incremental backups can be merged, into the previous incremental backup, or the previous complete backup. It is considered to be good practice to include several levels of backups. For example, incrementals for the last two days, followed by a complete backup for three days ago, a week ago, and each month before that.
