CAD (Computer-Aided Design)
Generic term for any software used to create 2D/3D technical designs.
Applies to all tools (e.g., Revit, SolidWorks, SketchUp) across industries like engineering, architecture, or manufacturing.
Function: Drafting, modeling, simulation, or documentation—depending on the software.
AutoCAD
A specific CAD software developed by Autodesk (the most widely known).
Specializes in 2D drafting (e.g., floor plans, schematics) but handles basic 3D.
Industry staple since 1982—often used for mechanical, civil, or electrical drawings.
Fun Fact: When people say “CAD,” they often mean AutoCAD—but not all CAD is AutoCAD!
Example: At Silicon Engineering Consultants, we use AutoCAD for 2D layouts but switch to Revit (BIM) for intelligent 3D models.
CAD is the generic name for all Computer Aided Design and Draughting software. Autocad is the most popular software provider.
A CAD platform is a program such as AutoCAD and a CAD sytem is a connection between CAD and CAM Products.
The term "autocad" is frequently used to refer to any type of computer aided drafting (CAD), however AutoCAD is actually the trademarked name of the CAD software produced by a company called Autodesk. CAD is a software design tool used in construction and manufacturing to produce detailed drawings.

The UIs, commands and operations of GstarCAD are almost the same with AutoCAD, if you've ever used AutoCAD, you will proficiently use it without any training.

In my opinion, and this is what we implemented in our company, an AutoCAD operator is a person who has a basic knowledge of how to operate the AutoCAD program. This person has done an entry level AutoCAD course and knows how to draw lines etc. in the CAD program. An AutoCAD draftsman is a person that also knows how to operate the AutoCAD program but is also proficient in composing technical drawings. (e.g. have a good understanding of scales, projections, sections, etc.) We based these different descriptions on pre AutoCAD times. Any person can draw lines or circles on paper with a pen, but you had to do technical drawing courses to become a draftsperson.
