Super computers are made for extensive and intense calculations. They are built to be able to solve humanly impossible mathematical problems in mere seconds.

N.S.A has a super computer called the "Thinking Machine". It is used to break codes. It can do in a few seconds what a Home PC will take tens of thousands of years to calculate.

Regular computers are also made for calculation, but not to the extent that super computers are designed for. Most regular computers involve word processing, calculated excel documents, and financial software. The more intensive calculations would come with graphic processing as physics require a bit of muscle, and that is why we add-on graphic cards.

A supercomputer is one which has high computational capability and, possibly, several processors and a large amount of memory. Supercomputers are used in scenarios where the time taken to execute an instruction ought to be short. The efficiency of supercomputers is higher, and they can execute more instructions in a shorter amount of time, compared to personal computers. Supercomputers are more expensive than personal computers.

A personal computer is one which is used for domestic purposes such as editing documents, watching movies and playing games. In this case, the memory and processing capability may not be impressive, but sufficient for domestic usage. As there is no need for several processors or a large memory or storage, the cost is less.

Personal computers are usually less powerful and designed for home use.

Supercomputers are many times more powerful and are used for more important things like government use or large corporations.

  • Supercomputers are usually rated at least 10 times the performance of high end mainframes using similar technology.
  • Mainframes are typically 10 times the performance of high end minicomputers using similar technology.
  • Minicomputers are typically 10 times the performance of high end micro/personal computers using similar technology.

In other words, your personal computer has probably less than 1000th the performance of a super computer.

Also a supercomputer is almost certainly noticeably larger than your personal computer.

A laptop computer is typically a fairly small (about the size of a large book), thin portable computer that has all the essential computer components built-in. Laptop computers typically include (besides the typical motherboard/processor/memory/etc components) a built-in monitor, keyboard, mouse and battery.

A supercomputer is typically an extremely large, rare and extremely expensive computer purchased by corporations to do extensive, complicated and/or very specialized work. For example, in 1997, IBM designed and built Deep Blue, a Chess-playing supercomputer. Its one and only purpose in life was to challenge Garry Kasparov, the then reigning chess world champion, to a chess match. After its victory against Garry Kasparov, it was dismantled.

Another example of a supercomputer would be one designed to be used by the military to simulate nuclear explosions.

One could even say, simply put, the difference between a laptop and a supercomputer is that one is very portable and the other is equally not.

Super Computer - A computer is a general purpose programmable machine which carries out arithmetic and logical operations according to a specified set of instructions. Supercomputers are types of computers which possess the best processing capacity, and therefore are expensive than other types of computers.

Laptop - A laptop computer, sometimes called a notebook computer by manufacturers, is a battery- or AC-powered personal computer generally smaller than a briefcase that can easily be transported and conveniently used in temporary spaces such as on airplanes, in libraries, temporary offices, and at meetings. A laptop typically weighs less than 5 pounds and is 3 inches or less in thickness.

A laptop is a scaled-down computer that is designed for low-power consumption than a traditional desktop. A supercomputer is a cluster of individual smaller computers that work together that a re usually focused for calculating a large amount of numbers and won't be able to play games on it as they're not optimized for multi-node parallelization.
