As the previous answer said, the most common dial-up (analog) modem speed nowadays is 56Kbps but you can also find some dinosaurs out there that are 33.6Kbps, 28.8Kbps, or even slower. The first modem I ever used was a 300 baud. Back at the time, that was a good speed. However, to put it in perspective, think of the "ticker tape" running at the bottom of Fox News or CNN or some other news channel that gives little snippets of news stories. That line is running about 30 characters per second, which is the same speed as 300 baud. From there, modem speeds increased to 600, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 14.4K, 19.2K, and the more modern and aforementioned speeds of 28.8K, 33.6K, and 56K.

Also, just as a tidbit, if one refers to baud or Kbaud, it means the same things as bps or Kbps. Baud is defined as one bit per second. Kbaud is 1024 bits per second (though it is often rounded down to 1000).

usually 56kb/second, unless you have an older modem which may transfer at a slower rate of 28.8kb/second ~Zero

What are Modems used for in Internet?

Basically, modem is used to connect the analog world to the digital world. In other words, you can say it is the device that is used to convert the analog signal to digital signal. For eg. the modem connected with a computer is usually converts the analog signal that comes through the wire to the digital bit bcoz computer can only understands the digital signal...

Are the modem and the codec functional inverses ie could an inverted modem?

No, the modem and codec are not exactly the functional inverse of each other. teh modem converts the digital data to analog signal by teh modulating part of it. teh demodulating part of the modem can be used to covert teh ANALOG SIGNAL to digital data....but this analog signal will be modulated analog signal. the coding part of teh codec convert teh analog signals to teh digital signal .these analog signals are pure analog signals. Hence teh codec and modem may seem as functional inverses but do not work as so due to teh fact dat the demodulating part of the modem used only the modulated analog signal and cannot process the pure analog signals .

What is the full form of modem?

The Full Form of Modem is : Modulator-demodulator. It is used to convert analog signals to digital signal and viceversa

Is the computer tower also called a modem?

The core of a computer system is normally the CPU or central processing unit or processor. This processor connects to a motherboard. The motherboard serves as a connector for all hardware components, modems, memory, drives, and peripherals. A modem is a piece of hardware that helps your computer communicate with other computers. The modem modulates and demodulates analog signals between a phone line and your computer's data.

Analog modem use which type of connector?

The type of connector is used by the analog modems is RJ11 or RJ45.

Why do you use modem?

modem means modulator demodulator. it converts digital signal to analog signal. it is use to transmit computer signal (digital signal) over the telephone line to communicate to other computers. modem converts the computer digital signal into frequency (analog signal) so that it can transmit over the telephone line and at the receiving end the modem converts the analog signal back to digital for the receiving computer to understand it.

What is an analog modem?

A analog modem is a typical modem found in personal computers. A digital modem is similar to a DSL type modem. Most computers do not have digital modems.
