The modern use of the acronym RAM is a computer memory term, Random Access Memory.

Random Access Memory (RAM) provides space for your computer to read and write data to be accessed by the CPU (central processing unit). When people refer to a computer's memory they usually mean its RAM. If you add more RAM to your computer, you reduce the number of times your CPU must read data from your hard disk. This usually allows your computer to work considerably faster, as RAM is many times faster than a hard disk. RAM is volatile, so data stored in RAM stays there ONLY as long as your computer is running. As soon as you turn the computer off, any data in the RAM disappears.

As one example, if you use your mouse in MS Word to highlight text, and click COPY, the copied data is "held" in RAM memory until you hit PASTE in another document or spot in the original file. That data stays in RAM, until you COPY something else, OR until you turn off the computer.

RAM today it takes the form of integrated circuits that allow the stored data to be accessed in any order (i.e., at random). The word random thus refers to the fact that any piece of data can be returned in a constant time, regardless of its physical location and whether or not it is related to the previous piece of data. This contrasts with storage mechanisms such as tapes, magnetic discs and optical discs, which rely on the physical movement of the recording medium or a reading head. In these devices, the movement takes longer than the data transfer, and the retrieval time varies depending on the physical location of the next item. The word RAM is mostly associated with volatile types of memory , where the information is lost after the power is switched off. However, many other types of memory are RAM as well , including most types of ROM and a kind of flash memory called NOR-Flash.

When your computer runs out of ram does it borrow space from the CPU?

If your computer runs out of ram it will use virtual memory, essentially meaning it will borrow space from the hard drive.

Why ram is called volataile memory?

RAM is called volatile memory, because data can only be stored within the RAM when there is constant power to the computer. Meaning as soon as the the computer looses power then all of the data that was stored within the RAM is erased.

What do you mean by Ram Ram?

Ram is a Hindu god and people use "Ram Ram"when they see or feel something wrong.Eg. if someone dies, religious persons may say "Ram Ram".Though it comprises of the term "RAM", it is not actually related to computer as the word is repeated 2 times and that does not make any special meaning in computer.

When you change RAM cards from a lower amount to a higher amount will changing it remove anything stored in memory in my laptop and is RAM a place where any info is actually stored?

Computer RAM is used only during operation. It's called "volatile memory", meaning that every time the computer is turned off, everything that has been stored on RAM is deleted. Computer disk is a "non volatile" storage medium, meaning that programs and data will (hopefully) be available next time you turn on the computer. RAM is necessary for normal operation of the computer. Programs and data that are essential to the immediate operations of the computer are loaded into RAM as the computer starts and when you start applications. Insufficient RAM may cause the computer to run very slow, if at all. Since nothing is stored on RAM when the computer is turned off, increasing the amount of RAM should not negatively affect any data that is currently stored on your computer.

What does these letters mean RAM?

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is a type of computer memory that is used to store data and machine code that is currently being used or processed by the CPU. RAM is volatile memory, meaning it loses its contents when the computer is powered off.

When is your work located in RAM?

Only when the computer is booted and your application is loaded. Ram is "volatile", meaning that everything goes away when you turn off the power.
