In our modern world, we are so constantly surrounded with digital computing devices (computers) that we find them in everything. Indeed when someone uses the generic term "computer" they may now be referring to a calculator, an automotive part, a handheld PDA, a cellular phone or even the programmable thermostat in their home.
As a result of computers being so widespread there has been a tendency for people to clarify when they are discussing a multi-purpose computer system as opposed to one of the many embedded computers found throughout our appliances and gizmos. The word "system" fills this role nicely as it more accurately reflects the fact that modern computers are an integrated system of several separate computers working together.
