Computer networks enable people to communicate over wide distances. It's also cheaper for companies to use a computer network between different sites - than using the telephone network.

To use the common 'superhighway' analogy (much to my chagrin), think of the internet as a highway and the web being just one lane. Other technologies (FTP, Mail services, DNS etc) use different lanes.

The Internet is the area among these internetworks that is publicly accessible. It becomes publicly accessible by using so-called "IP addresses" that are publicly visible.
The Internet was originally meant as a way to connect networks for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It started as a text-based menu-driven network and has evolved into the media-rich communications internetwork we have today.
