An Optical Character Reader (OCR) is a combination of software and a hardware document scanner. A document (such as a letter) is scanned with a flat-bed or roller scanner and read into a computer. That computer image (or picture) of the letter is then interpreted by the OCR software. The software generates a text file of the information that is in the image. That text file can be viewed, edited, printed, Etc. just as though it was created in a word processor.
OCR software has come a long way. Early OCR programs were only marginally accurate. Today, they are much, much better. An OCR program can save lots of time re-entering text into a computer document file from a keyboard. However, you will still have to VERY CAREFULLY proof-read your document to catch the errors.
Input device
The input and output devices of a computer are normally abbreviated as I/O devices. There are a variety of input units, which are used by computers.THE MOST COMMONLY USED UNIT OF THIS TYPE IS A KEYBOARD AND A MOUSE OF A DESKTOP COMPUTER.Special purpose units are scanners, magnetic ink character reader, optical mark reader, optical character reader and bar code reader.
Emanuel Goldberg was the inventor of Optical Character Recognition. However, another man, Gustav Tauschek, patented the Optical Character Recognition.
Optical Mark Reader (OMR) is a high-tech data input device integrated optical and electrical technology. It is a powerful tool for speedy automatic data capture, thousands of data bytes per second, several hundreds of times faster than manpower, especially it can work for a long time without break.

The input device is an optical scanner, optical character recognition is an application performed over the scanned image. The purpose of optical character recognition is to convert an image of characters in a page of text into ASCII characters (as though you had typed them in on a word processor). This allows the contents of the scanned page to be edited.
advantage = quick saves time efficient for schools and offices
Yes, OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition. It is the process of converting different types of documents, such as scanned paper documents, PDF files, or images captured by a digital camera, into editable and searchable data.
